VICTIMS OF RAPE OR A SEXUAL ATTACK

Rape is recognised when the victim is forced to have sexual relations no matter what the relationship between them is, even if they are married.

After a rape or sexual attack, all victims need help to overcome this traumatism.

DO NOT STAY ALONE, DO NOT REMAIN SILENT

Silence and secrecy only favour the attackers.

No matter what the circumstances of your attack that you have suffered, it is your attacker who is guilty. Under no circumstances is rape or sexual attack justified.

TAKE STEPS

Undergo a medical examination

This examination must be done as soon as possible after the attack, but nevertheless do not give up even if the attack is in the past.  This also concerns your health (care, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS contamination and pregnancy prevention.)   You can also obtain a medical certificate, which will be useful for your criminal procedure.

If circumstances allow, have a medical examination before you wash yourself in order to obtain elements of proof: a clinical examination, bruises or marks of violence, biological samples, state of shock, psychological trauma…

Keep all stained clothing etc. In a paper bag to bring with you to the Emergency Department, this could help to identify your rapist and be used as material evidence.

BRING CIVIL ACTION AGAINST YOUR ATTACKER

It is recommended that you bring civil action against your attacker. So that, your lawyer can be informed of all elements within your file and the proceedings of your case.
